The Romanby Roadies Ride Coast to Coast For Charity

The Romanby Roadies will be taking part in a gruelling cycle challenge in France starting on 5 September. 3 of the riders, Chris Smith (Maintenance), Andrew Sidgwick (Machine Operator) and Martin Derbyshire (Shot Blast Operator). are employed by Severfield at their Dalton site.

Severfield has supported the ride by providing a staff minibus to take the cyclists to and from the airport. Severfield has also arranged for a support vehicle to transport all of the bikes and cycle equipment for the total 5.5 days cycling in France.

The Coast to Coast ride is approximately 580 miles, starting in Biarritz (Atlantic Coast) and finishing in Argeles-sur-Mer (Mediterranean Coast). The chosen route crosses the Pyrenees Mountains, with the longest ascent at 23km long, and overall a height of 41,000ft will be climbed, including the most iconic climbs (Tourmalet, Aubisque and Aspin).

The riders decided that whilst taking part they would like to raise money for a charity, this was also something they had done previously.

It was agreed that they would raise money for the Yorkshire Air Ambulance (YAA). A  local charity some of them have had a previous involvement with. Severfield also has a continuous involvement with this charity.

Ahead of their trip the riders answered a few questions:

What drives you? – What are the reasons for taking part?
When you agree to take part in something like this you think it sounds really interesting and that it will be really good. However, when it gets closer, (I think most of the other riders will agree), you start to feel a little apprehensive – as it’s going to hurt both mentally and physically. So, to do this for a charity adds that little bit more encouragement as there are people you know who are sponsoring and supporting you.

Are you expecting one rider in particular to be the ‘King of the mountain’?
Well if you look at some of the more athletic cyclists…perhaps one of those…?

Who is the ‘Speed Queen’ of the group?
When going downhill it’s undoubtedly every man for himself!

Due to an increase in the amount of rescues (20% increase on last year), the YAA now needs £12,000 per day to keep providing their invaluable rescue services to Yorkshire. Dealing with severe injuries they take patients to the nearest major trauma centres (these provide 24/7 consultant-led care) and provide patients with the best chance of survival/recovery.

To support this Coast to Coast ride please visit the Romanby Roadies JustGiving page. JustGiving sends your donation straight to the YAA Charity.

You can also donate/sponsor by sending a text message to 70070 with the code: PYAA50 followed by your chosen amount.

Severfield wishes The Romanby Roadies a safe and successful trip.
