The Ordsall Chord will provide 300 metres of new railway track, creating a link between Manchester’s main train stations; Oxford Road, Manchester Piccadilly and Severfield’s award-winning Manchester Victoria Station. Once completed, the Ordsall Chord will also provide increased capacity, more frequent trains and less congestion at Manchester’s main stations.
This project is part of Network Rail’s multi-billion-pound North of England Programme, which is an impressive scheme aiming to transform rail connectivity in the north of England and boost economic growth.
For the delivery of the Ordsall Chord project, the Northern Hub Alliance was formed, made up of; Network Rail, Siemens, Amey Sersa JV, Skanska BAM JV, AECOM Mott MacDonald JV and Severfield. Being part of this alliance has enabled Early Contractor Involvement (ECI), which was essential during the design stage as certain aspects of the civil engineering works were particularly critical for programme delivery.
Christmas and New Year Works 2016
Following 12 months of careful planning, Severfield successfully installed 2 new bridges and 6 bespoke Overhead Line Equipment (OLE) gantries during a 16-day construction blockade over the 2016 Christmas period.
On day 5 of the blockade, Severfield erected both a 300-tonne structure to the Chord (OCD-1) and a 190-tonne replacement bridge (COL-125). These were carefully positioned using Self-Propelled Modular Transporters (SPMTs) all within a 24-hour period, then handed over to the client. Prior to this final construction stage of these sections, Severfield had placed these onto temporary trestles back in August 2016 to enable other trades to complete their works on these sections, such as concrete and decking.
Day 10 of the blockade saw Severfield successfully erect 2 bespoke OLE portals within the timeframe allocated. On the final day, the line was handed back to Network Rail, completed, and with trains running smoothly.
This was a successful operation, a great way to end 2016 and will play a key role in the new and improved North of England rail plan.
Our projects; Ordsall Chord and Manchester Victoria Station are due to feature in tonight’s episode of Great British Railway Journeys on BBC2 at 6:30pm (Episode 6: Blackpool to Manchester Victoria). If you miss tonight’s episode, the programme will be available shortly after broadcast on BBC iplayer.
