Severfield's journey towards nuclear industry transformation - Fit for Nuclear (F4N)

At Severfield, we recognise the significance of the nuclear sector and the importance of meeting the world's increasing energy demands and addressing climate change, which is why we continually ensure that we meet the necessary industry standards.

The F4N initiative was introduced by the Nuclear Advanced Manufacturing Research Centre (Nuclear AMRC) in collaboration with industry experts and nuclear industry leaders. The programme aims to ensure that suppliers engaged in the nuclear sector adhere to the highest standards of quality, safety, and efficiency. Having already achieved Fit For Nuclear (F4N) certification across the majority of our Nuclear and Infrastructure business, Severfield is continually undergoing a rigorous assessment across the business as a whole that evaluates our processes, capabilities, and overall readiness to serve the nuclear industry.

At Severfield, we recognise the significance of the nuclear sector and the importance of meeting the world's increasing energy demands and addressing climate change, which is why we continually ensure that we meet the necessary industry standards. As such, the F4N programme is an excellent way to introduce a new way of thinking. It includes criteria to assess employee engagement with nuclear safety and gives our major clients confidence in our ability to deliver nuclear projects.

So far, two of our production sites have undergone comprehensive assessments and have been granted F4N certification. Assessments involve analysing various aspects of the company's operations, including quality control, health, and safety protocols, documentation practices, and adherence to nuclear-specific standards. To put the assessments into perspective, it can take roughly 2-4 weeks to approve one single weld procedure, so this is a lengthy procedure. With plans to dedicate a complex production line to nuclear projects, we have begun the stringent assessment for certification at our largest manufacturing site in Dalton. This procedure may take up to 9 months to complete. Arwen May, Head of Nuclear Quality, says: “Because each location has its operational needs, it’s nice that you can break this down. I like the way the assessment can be used to compare your locations as well.”

The F4N certification is opening new doors for Severfield and is also helping boost our confidence among potential partners. Currently, we are engaged with the likes of Sellafield on brand-new nuclear projects, proving our ability to deliver top-tier nuclear solutions.

As the world continues to prioritise sustainable and low-carbon energy sources, Severfield's strategic move towards the nuclear sector proves to be vital for a greener future.
