At Severfield, investing in people is central to how we build, not just steel structures, but careers.
Shariae Johnson, our first shared apprentice employed by one of our London sites, is undertaking a Level 3 Business Administration apprenticeship as part of our new shared apprenticeship scheme with Evolve, a registered social enterprise specialising in creating employment pathways for young people across the capital. This scheme allows apprentices to gain long-term employment while moving across different Severfield sites in London, supporting delivery on short-term projects and building broad, practical experience across the business.
Strengthening our social value commitment
Over the past year, Severfield has further developed its social value strategy, with a particular focus on supporting our clients’ Section 106 commitments across London.
Through our partnership with Evolve, we are helping to open up meaningful career opportunities within the structural steel industry.
Our apprenticeship programme already spans our factories and offices nationwide, delivering over 4,600 weeks of apprenticeship training in FY26. The introduction of shared apprenticeships builds on this strong foundation, ensuring that employment opportunities can be sustained even when project durations vary.
A shared apprenticeship scheme typically allows apprentices to work for multiple employers to complete their training, particularly in industries like construction where projects can be short-term. Apprentices gain diverse skills and site experience by working on different projects with various companies, increasing their employability.
In our case, we utilise the ‘shared’ concept in being the sole provider of the work, but across multiple site Severfield is working on.
A career in construction
For Shariae, the experience has already provided exposure to different teams, projects and working environments, offering a strong platform for long-term career development within the industry. See what she had to say about her experience so far!
We look forward to continuing to expand our shared apprenticeship programme and working alongside partners and clients to create lasting social value in the communities where we operate.
