The redevelopment of London Bridge Station was part of Network Rail’s £6bn Thameslink upgrade programme which started in 2012, designed to improve connections, reduce delays and boost the North to South commuter routes.
Since its transformation, the station now provides its many visitors with approximately 80 retail units and a concourse described as being the size of the Wembley Stadium pitch.

The project meant the demolition (managed by another contractor) and reconstruction of fifteen platforms, each covered by striking canopies, whilst the station remained open at all times.
With a tight programme and site constraints, we had to develop and pre-manufacture a canopy system off-site. Each section included a steel framed structure, roof, soffit cladding and lighting/speakers/first fix electrical fittings. The 1,200 cassettes required were delivered to site and constructed from transport frames. Each one of these was bespoke and supported from aesthetic plate columns, ‘Y’ arms and spine beams.
We partnered with cladding specialist, Prater, for the development and delivery of the cassettes. This system enabled the canopy to be constructed quickly and meant other trades set to follow us for their own work, could do so without delay.
Platforms 6-15 and associated concourse were opened to the public first, on time, and these were followed by the remaining phases of steelwork to complete the remaining five platforms, associated concourse and Tooley Street façade.
Sustainability ratings and success
This project has a CEEQUAL rating of Excellent and in fact it’s the highest rating ever - a score of 97.3%. This relates to a number of things including working with partners like us to divert waste from landfill and special considerations in the design and construction phases.
