Baker Viaduct - Transpennine Route Upgrade,
Huddersfield, West Yorkshire

Baker Viaduct

Baker Viaduct is a standout addition to the Transpennine Route Upgrade (TRU), a major infrastructure programme set to transform journeys across the north of England. Delivered in partnership with the Transpennine Route Upgrade Alliance, the viaduct plays a crucial role in realigning the track near Huddersfield to create a new grade separated junction, boosting capacity and improving performance on this key part of the network.

The viaduct spans across both the River Calder and the Calder and Hebble Navigation Canal comprising three independent modules, each made up of three spans. While they work together as part of a single transport corridor, each module stands alone structurally, with separate bearings and a distinctive configuration that brings a strong visual rhythm to the crossing.

Severfield was engaged to provide, fabrication, erection, and temporary works design, delivering 2,389 tonnes of steelwork across the three Modules. Installation labour and plant will be supplied in collaboration with MJ Hughes. The decks are predominantly precast, with some in-situ elements introduced to navigate site-specific geometry. During the build, trestles will be used to support the structure while pier heads are cast, ensuring seamless progress even at the more complex intermediate piers.

One of the key innovations on the project is the reuse of temporary works, a simple but effective decision to help cut down on both fabrication time and embodied carbon. Temporary works have been designed for efficiency; maximising material use while maintaining the safety and structural integrity needed for a project of this scale.

Despite the structural complexity and logistical demands of building across both water and live railway lines, the viaduct remains on programme. The early coordination between Severfield, the Alliance, and transport haulier Allely’s has played a huge part in keeping the momentum going.

Baker Viaduct brings together engineering precision, environmental consideration and collaborative planning. It’s not just an essential link in the upgraded route, it’s also a reflection of what can be achieved through smart design, strong partnerships and an uncompromising approach to quality.
