This waste to energy plant at Poolbeg in Dublin diverts more than 600,000 tonnes of waste per year (which is otherwise non-recyclable) away from landfill and transforms it into enough electricity to power 80,000 homes.
Not only was this project fascinating, but it was also very topical, as recycling, waste reduction and energy are topics we’re all bound to be engaging with regularly these days.
This amazing building is rounded at all corners and the whole structure actually curves upwards. While looking beautiful, this posed its own challenges for us when looking at the technical design and construction, which featured some complex steelwork geometry. Such an interesting shape would not have been possible without the use of BIM - a feeling shared by all of the design and steelwork team members. PM Groups’ use of Revit and model management tool Navisworks, along with our use of Tekla, allowed for a detailed co-ordinated fabrication model that did not clash with the extensive process and services works.
A great deal of detailed planning went into erecting the steel and the associated logistics, because the site itself was confined. Also, working at height to lift large steel elements into place was another challenge that was overcome thanks to the extensive design and construction coordination between PM Group and our team on site.
The end result is all housed within one large steel-framed structure to minimise noise. It measures approximately 200m by 100m, rising to a maximum height of 52m (excluding the flue, which is 100m-tall).
