M8 Footbridge, Glasgow – Project Update

Aptly nicknamed ‘Street in the Sky’, the M8 Footbridge project is well underway...

Our bridge team have been working alongside BAM Nuttall Ltd and Glasgow City Council and are currently supplying and installing a new 58m long pedestrian and cyclist footbridge across the M8, connecting Sighthill and Glasgow city centre.

The new bridge will reconnect Sighthill to the nearby city centre as part of a £250 million regeneration of the area which will offer affordable housing within walking distance of Strathclyde University, Queen Street Station and Glasgow’s most popular shopping locations.

In this video you can see that the bridge is being built offline, on temporary trestles.

On 22 March 2021, Severfield and BAM Nuttall Ltd reached a project milestone with the delivery of the final main bridge section. In total, 17 complexed steel assemblies have been transported to the project site, many of which were delivered during the night-time and lifted into the temporary offline build position for assembly, installation and welding.

Once all of the fabrication has been completed on site, the bridge structure will be jacked up in a controlled manner to a height suitable for a Self-Propelled Modular Transporter (SPMT) to be positioned and then within motorway possession the bridge is moved to its final location between abutments. There will be partial and full closures of the Scottish motorway later this summer to ensure a safely and smooth installation.

The Glasgow City Region City Deal sees both the Scottish and UK Governments give £500 million in funding to infrastructure projects.
