Severfield is carbon neutral

We are delighted to announce that in August 2021, we achieved our current year target to be accredited as carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust.

Operating in a sustainable manner is crucial to both the current and future success of the Group. In line with our sustainability strategy, we are delighted to announce that in August 2021, we achieved our current year target to be accredited as carbon neutral by the Carbon Trust, in accordance with PAS 2060, the only recognised international standard for carbon neutrality. This is an important milestone in our journey towards Net Zero.

Carbon neutral in this context means that we use carbon offsetting from sustainable development experts ClimateCare, to eliminate the combined scope 1, scope 2 and operational scope 3 (business travel, transport and distribution, employee commuting, and waste) greenhouse gas (‘GHG’) emissions generated from all our manufacturing facilities and construction sites.

“Severfield have been reporting and managing it’s carbon emissions since 2015. In that time, we have realised significant carbon reductions. Achieving carbon neutral status across both our manufacturing facilities and construction sites further strengthens our continued efforts to reduce our environmental impact.” Said Phillipa Recchia, Group SHE Director

Projects which are benefitting from our carbon offsetting programme include solar power projects in India (chosen because of our existing manufacturing footprint in India), the manufacture of efficient cookstoves in Ghana (chosen because of the air quality issues in Ghana), and the regeneration of degraded lands in Chile (chosen because of the level of innovation associated with this project).

ClimateCare’s Head of Client Services, Aude Duquesne explains:

"We work with forward-thinking organisations to turn their climate responsibilities into positive outcomes. Our trademark Climate+Care approach helps organisations take a smart approach to addressing their environmental impacts by offsetting their carbon emissions through projects which also support sustainable development”.

The Group has reduced its carbon emissions by more than 60 per cent since 2015, through various initiatives including shifting to more energy-efficient technologies, lean manufacturing techniques and by switching to green electricity.
