As a major construction business, we are committed to minimising our impact on the natural environment and local communities, as well as maintaining sustainable practices in all our disciplines.

Significant progress has already been made in areas such as carbon management, transport policy and strategy, renewable energy and the responsible sourcing of materials.

We are one of the only companies within our sector to achieve the Carbon Trust Standard for reducing CO2 emissions year on year and became the first steel fabrication contractor to gain the BREEAM BES 6001 best practice standard for the Responsible Sourcing of Materials.

What is BES 6001?

‘Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products
BES 6001 – The Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing

The construction industry is a major consumer of resources and has a large impact on the sustainability of the UK and the wider world. BRE Global has developed a Framework Standard for Responsible Sourcing (BES 6001) along with an associated independent third-party certification scheme. This Standard and certification scheme will help organisations manage and reduce the impacts throughout the supply chain.

Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products provides a holistic approach to managing a product from the point at which component materials are mined or harvested, through manufacture and processing.

Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products is demonstrated through an ethos of supply chain management and product stewardship and encompasses social, economic and environmental dimensions.

Responsible Sourcing of Construction Products addresses aspects such as stakeholder engagement, labour practices and the management of supply chains serving materials sectors upstream of the manufacturer.

The standard sets out requirements under 3 main headings:
• Organisational management
• Supply chain management
• Environmental and social issues

To meet this Standard, organisations must satisfy certain compulsory elements. In addition, there are higher levels of compliance that can result in a higher performance rating being awarded.’

We are also very proud to have successfully gained the Gold Membership Standard of the Steel Construction Sustainability Charter. This is a milestone achievement recognising our sustainability policies, community engagement, energy and environmental policies, and wider corporate social responsibility practices.

The Steel Construction Sustainability Charter is governed by the British Constructional Steelwork Association (BCSA) and the Register of Qualified Steelwork Contractors Scheme for Bridgeworks (RQSC). The charter offers clients a way to identify the UK’s most sustainable companies in the steelwork industry. Sustainability is now an important consideration in procurement as steel is being promoted to clients, specifiers and designers as a more sustainable form of construction than concrete.

Visit the BSCA website for more information about the Charter and sustainability in the steelwork industry.
